The Chickens started out as cute baby chicks the kids just had to have when; we first moved to the farm, not a thought to as what breed type or how well they lay eggs, let alone eating the eggs or even selling them....
It has become a whole lot more of a hobby. We started with breeds that laid the most beautiful egg colors, then even if the breed didn't lay the prettiest egg we started collecting rare or heritage breeds. More or less that means they don't produce as many eggs as the girls we began with. (LOL)
Two of my children showed chickens in 4-H, and one went on to show at the Oregon State Fair. She now has set herself up a separate coop on the farm to breed and sell her favorite breed of MILLE FLEUR BANTAM COCHIN CHICKENS you'll find pictures of them on her website. http://sunquestgoats.weebly.com/
In the slideshow, some of their breed names or pet names maybe listed. We love them all the same! As of 2018 grandma chicken is still with us going on 14 and still lays pretty blue eggs, she was one of our original 4-H chickens and is one of only a few ever to be named.
We do sell our extra fresh eggs, all our girl's free range on green grass all day, and have access to Mt. spring water. (They indeed are our spoiled pets!)
Update 2018 Grandma chicken is no longer laying eggs, she is the last one out of the coop in the morning and the first one to bed, but is still healthy and happy!
